Biography
Dr Aladdin Al Zahran is an academic and professional in the field of Interpreting & Translation Studies, renowned for his expertise and dedication. With a solid educational background and diverse experience, he has made significant progress in teaching, research, and professional engagements.
Dr Al Zahran obtained his Bachelor’s degree in English Language & Literature from Aleppo University in Syria, providing him with a strong foundation in language and literature studies. He further pursued his passion for translation and interpreting by completing a Master’s degree in Arabic/English Translation & Interpreting with Distinction from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom. Building upon his expertise, he earned a PhD in Interpreting Studies from the University of Salford (UK), specializing in intercultural mediation and the interpreter’s role as intercultural mediator in conference interpreting settings.
Currently, Dr Al Zahran serves as an Assistant Professor of Interpreting & Translation Studies at Sohar University in Oman. Since September 2018, he has held the position of Programme Coordinator for the BA in English Language and Translation, demonstrating outstanding leadership and organizational skills. Alongside his administrative responsibilities, he actively engages in teaching a wide range of theoretical and practical courses in interpreting, translation, language, and linguistics, imparting his knowledge and expertise to students of diverse backgrounds.
With his experience in quality assurance, academic standards and accreditation in higher education, Dr Al Zahran ensures the delivery of excellence in teaching and learning, as well as in the provision of effective academic advising and student support. His commitment to academic program management and strategic and operational planning has played a crucial role in shaping the program’s success and helped him contribute to the wider issues at the Faculty and University levels. Moreover, he has demonstrated his organizational skills by successfully organizing conferences, providing platforms for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and collaborate.
In recognition of his research experience, Dr Al Zahran has published research papers in high-impact (Scopus) journals, disseminating his findings to a wider audience and contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field. Furthermore, Dr Al Zahran has gained valuable experience in research as a peer reviewer, contributing to the advancement of knowledge by providing insightful evaluations and feedback on scholarly works in the field of Interpreting & Translation Studies. His dedication to research has also earned him a research grant for the project entitled “Improving Corpus Building and Terminology Extraction Process Using Semantic Leads.” This project, funded by The Research Council of Oman, Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, received a substantial grant of OMR9,500, enabling Dr Al Zahran to further his research and contribute to the development of innovative methodologies.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr Al Zahran boasts industry experience as a freelance interpreter, translator, translation reviser, and translation consultant. His diverse professional engagements have enhanced his understanding of practical challenges and real-world applications, enriching his teaching and research with invaluable insights.
Dr Al Zahran’s passion for his field and his dedication to excellence have earned him recognition and respect, having been awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Outstanding Teaching Award 2018 – 2019. His innovative pedagogical approaches to teaching have garnered praise from students and colleagues alike. Through his industry experience, he brings real-world expertise to the classroom, bridging the gap between academia and professional practice.
With his remarkable achievements and multifaceted expertise, Dr Aladdin Al Zahran continues to make significant contributions to the teaching of Interpreting & Translation Studies.
