General Requirements
Admission regulations are used to specify the prior knowledge and skills necessary in relation to the content and objectives of a programme, and the criteria according to which the suitability of a prospective student will be judged. Procedures for assessing any prior learning or credit of non-standard applicants or for advanced entry are included.
The admission of a student is based on the reasonable expectation that the student will be able to fulfil the objectives of the programme and achieve the standard required for the award. The number of students admitted may be controlled by directives issued by the Ministry of Higher Education as well as by internal recruitment targets of the University.
Entry requirements apply equally to full-time and part-time study, taught programmes and those delivered wholly, or in part, by supported learning, or through work placements.
Students may alter their mode of study within a programme if necessary due to circumstances, if provision is available and with the agreement of the University.
All entry qualifications must be authenticated, so students must provide proof of qualifications gained. Any student not complying with such a request, or falsifying evidence is liable to exclusion from the University. The number, range and scope of admissions may be guided or limited by student target numbers in the context of the University Strategic Plan, or by other constraints on numbers (e.g. facilities).
Students may change their programme of study and enter another programme subject to:
- The entry requirements of the proposed programme
- The availability of a place on the proposed programme
- The agreement of the dean of the faculty of the former and proposed programmes
- The viability of completion of the proposed programme, including sufficient time available (admission to the new programme may need to be at a lower level academically than that which the student is terminating)
- Obtaining the agreement of the student’s scholarship sponsor, where applicable.
Applications to enroll in undergraduate programs can be submitted any time during the year. Normally, first semester starts in September and the second semester starts in February. The application form is available at Admission & Registration Department
- To be eligible to apply for entry to undergraduate programmes of Sohar University, prospective students must have:
- Completed the General Certificate, formerly Secondary School Completion Certificate or Diploma of General Education in Oman, or equivalent, and
- Achieved the relevant entry score as outlined in the HEAC Guidelines on Student Admission which is published annually and made available to all school leavers. The Entry Score may vary according to the academic programme, and is reviewed annually.
Prospective Students Applying for Entry must also:
- Meet any specified minimum English language proficiency requirements to enter the University General Foundation Programme or to gain direct entry to the University’s undergraduate programmes. Have a minimum IELTS score of 5 or TOEFL iBT score of 58 or TOEFL Paper Based (PB) score of at least 500 for admission to undergraduate programmes. English language proficiency requirements are not applicable to academic programs taught in Arabic.
For qualifying students, entry to the University will be based upon order of merit.
Additional requirements may be specified for particular programmes of study in accordance with the validation of that particular programme

Applicants intending to enter SU undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, have to complete and submit the following documents:

- 2 Attested copies of former/relevant transcripts and academic certificates.

The admission of a student is based on the reasonable expectation that he/she will be able to fulfil the objectives of the programme and achieve the standard required for the award.
Numbers of students admitted may be controlled by directives issued by the Ministry of Higher Education as well as by internal recruitment targets of the University.
All entry qualifications must be authenticated, so students must provide proof of qualifications gained. Any student not complying with such a request or falsifying evidence is liable to exclusion from the University.
The Admission and Registration department is the focal point for all student admissions and registration activity.
The A&R department receives and processes student applications that meet the general admission requirements for each undergraduate programme. Some undergraduate programmes have special conditions to enroll students.
The A&R department sends the applications for those programmes to the relevant faculty for necessary action before completion of admission process for the relevant students. After receiving back the approved list of students from relevant faculties, the A&R department completes the admission process for those students. Enrolled students receive a document that confirm enrollments and contains information such as student name, student ID number, semester and academic year of enrollment, name of faculty, target major, user name, password and email.
Entry requirements may vary according to the academic programme, and these will be reviewed annually.
Recognition of prior learning may be considered where appropriate, and credit of the University granted for prior studies. Students who have undertaken undergraduate (or postgraduate) studies at other higher education institutions may apply for advanced entry on this basis, where a candidate can demonstrate (by means of evidence) that particular assessment or progression requirements of the planned programme have been met. The candidate must be able, by completion of the remaining requirements, to demonstrate that all outcomes of the programme can be met. A candidate may therefore be admitted to any appropriate point in the programme on the basis of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where the completion of relevant courses or programmes is certified.
Application of the above can result in exemption from particular courses in a programme which the student will not therefore be required to take (nor the assessments).
However, a precise match between prior learning outcomes and skills must be securely demonstrated, with evidence in the form of certification or a portfolio of work provided. Currency of either type of prior learning must be carefully considered (periods of currency of prior learning may vary between subjects, for example in languages compared with computing or science subjects). Prior learning of either type must be rigorously considered and assessed within the University by those with the appropriate subject expertise to do so. The evidence must be retained (i.e. the mapping against the verified certificated learning, or the portfolio of experiential work).
The proportion of (RPL) permitted in any given programme may vary, but must be agreed with the Dean. This proportion may not exceed 50% of the credits of the relevant programme. This may not exceed 25% of level 3 courses/units and normally none of level 4 courses/units. For postgraduate programmes no more than 30% (RPL) will be permitted, subject to approval by the Dean and shall depend on the rules and regulations of the relevant postgraduate programme. Credit will not be given for any learning which has already been submitted and credited towards an award.
Assessment of a foreign degree will be based upon the characteristics of the national system of education in Oman, the type of institution attended, its accreditation, and the level of studies completed.
In determining the equivalence of overseas qualifications (for initial or advanced standing), the University will be guided by the advice provided by the Ministry of Higher Education.
Candidates with physical, emotional or learning disabilities must be carefully counselled before they register. Care must be taken to ensure conformity with any relevant legislation.
There are currently no formal requirements but from an ethical point of view, institutions should be able to accommodate these types of students and offer them suitable assistance and support. The University will not prevent any student from continuing his/her education because of a disability, where all other entry requirements have been met. Reasonable adjustments may be made.
