Placement Test- GFP

GFP Placement Test

A candidate wishing to enroll in the General Foundation Program should first contact the SU Admission & Registration and submit their applications. Once accepted, the candidate will be notified about the placement tests.

Placement Test and Induction take place a week before the start of the semester. If you wish to join GFP, you will need to sit the placement test for all three components – English, Math and Computing. The placement test is conducted to identify a candidate’s proficiency in each component, and place them in the right level.

Students who studied and successfully passed GFP courses in recognized higher education institutions can be exempted from these courses, if the learning outcomes of the courses they studied cover those of the GFP courses at Sohar University. In order to have this exemption, the students need to submit course descriptions and official transcripts that confirm that they have passed the equivalent courses in the other institutions.

The GFP Placement Test assesses the candidates in three components – English, Computing and Math.

The Dynamic Placement Test is administered to ascertain the current level of English language proficiency of each newly registering student. The DPT has 2 parts to be completed in 30 minutes.

Students interested in joining GFP program at SU can familiarize themselves with the DPT by watching a video at this link.

On completion of the test, candidates are scored and placed into one of the three following levels: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate or Intermediate, or granted Direct Entry to the Faculty of their choice.

DPT Score Distribution
SCORE GFP LEVEL CEFR LEVEL IELTS LEVEL
0 – 20 Elementary A1 < 3.0
21 - 40 Pre-Intermediate A2 3.0
41 - 60 Intermediate B1 4.0
61+ Direct Entry B2+ 5.0+

A candidate with an overall IELTS band 5 or equivalent in each skill but not less than 4.5 in each skill, or a corresponding qualification from another institution of higher education in Oman can also get ‘Direct Entry’ to the faculties.

For MOHERI-sponsored candidates, ‘Direct Entry’ into the Faculty is possible only if they pass the tests in all three components of GFP – English, Computing and Mathematics. However, private candidates, who do not pass either the Computing test or and Math placement tests, can still register with the faculty but only on a half-load. These candidates must then register for the Computing and Math course at GFP and complete these components along with their faculty study simultaneously.

The Computing Placement Test aims to give the students a chance to be exempted from studying this course in GFP. The Computing course consists of two modules – IC3M1 and IC3M2. All students will sit for the placement test. This test evaluates the students’ knowledge and skills in MS Office, hardware, software, File management, networking, and email. Based on the results of the tests, the students will be categorized as below.

CPT Score Distribution
0 – 50 IC3M1
51 – 65 IC3M2
66 – 100 Exempted from both Computing Courses

In addition, if a student shows evidence of equivalency to Sohar University GFP Computing course i.e. International Certificate in Computing (IC3, ICDL), will be required to do a qualifying test to be exempted from the Computing course. If a student has completed a computing course in an accredited MHE, the student will have to provide a transcript and course description from the previous institution.

A student who newly joins the General Foundation Program (GFP) at Sohar University needs to show the capability to achieve the learning outcomes of two Mathematics courses. Those two courses are determined according to the faculty they will join. All new students have the chance to take a Math Placement Test (MPT) that gauges their competency in Math and places them in the appropriate Math study level. Based on the results of the tests, the students will be categorized as below.

MPT Score Distribution
0 – 50 SET 1
51 – 65 SET 2 OR SET 3
66 – 100 Exempted from GFP Math

If a student has completed a math course in an accredited MHE, the student will have to provide a transcript and course description from the previous institution.
