About the Unit
The Student Academic Support Unit (SASU), located within the Learning Resources Centre, provides a wide range of academic, co-curricular, and holistic support services to assist SU students in achieving both their educational and personal goals. In collaboration with the various departments, faculties, and the General Foundation Program, the unit offers resources and services designed to enhance student success. These services include the Writing Center, the Tutorial Center, self-access materials, workshops, training sessions, and events, all aimed at fostering a comprehensive learning experience. SASU offers both in-person and online support, catering to individuals and groups. Additionally, the unit encourages the development of autonomous learning among students. Peer Tutoring is a key initiative, where students support and tutor their peers, promoting a collaborative learning environment. SASU also works alongside students to run student-led initiatives, empowering them to take charge of their educational journey.
The Unit’s Roles and Responsibilities
- Enhance students’ academic and interpersonal skills by organizing various activities and events.
- Provide individual and group support in diverse academic fields and disciplines.
- Offer targeted support for at-risk students to improve their academic performance.
- Foster Peer Tutoring initiatives and encourage collaborative learning among students.
- Empower students to lead and run student-led initiatives.
The Unit’s Services
The Writing Center focuses on improving students’ writing skills and boosting their confidence in writing across various contexts.
Services Offered:
- One-on-one and group sessions to enhance writing strategies and skills.
- Professional advice and feedback on the quality of students’ written work.
- Consultations on academic, professional, and creative writing.
- Practice tasks for IELTS writing.
- Assistance with referencing and other related services.
The Tutorial Center provides support in a wide range of academic subjects through personalized one-to-one and small group tutorial sessions.
Services Offered:
- Tutorials in different faculty courses.
- General Arabic speaking practice sessions.
- General English skills sessions, including speaking, reading, and grammar.
- Presentation skills training.
- IELTS speaking test practice and other related services.

Peer Tutors’ Skills and Qualifications:
- be a registered SU student
- have completed the course or the subject that he/she wants to give tutorials in with grade 3.7 or above. If the student wants to give tutorials in his/ her current registered courses, a letter on the student’s performance from the course coordinators should be sent to the SASU coordinator
- have achieved a GPA of 3 or higher
- have good English/ Arabic communication skills
- show willingness to undergo training sessions
