A team of four students from Sohar University’s Faculty of Business, led by Professor Rakesh Belwal, participated in the prestigious ICCA Congress 2024, held in Abu Dhabi. Sponsored by ICCA Middle East, Oman Convention and Exhibition Center, Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, and Sohar University, the event provided a unique learning platform for the students to engage with global leaders and industry experts in the international meetings industry.
The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) is a global community and knowledge hub dedicated to the international association meetings industry. The Sohar University delegation, consisting of students Bushra Al Balushi, Wajood Al Maqbali, Fatma Al Ansari, and Badriya Al Balushi, participated in several sessions aimed at enhancing their understanding of event management and tourism development, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The students kicked off their participation with the Young Professionals Forum on Saturday, 19 October, held at the Khalifa Innovation Center, Khalifa University. This forum brought together young professionals and industry leaders to collaborate, share insights, and shape the future of the international events industry. Mentored by experienced professionals, the students engaged in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities and learned valuable lessons in event management.
They also attended an engaging opening ceremony, featuring a conversation between Dr. Senthil Gopinath, ICCA CEO, and H.E. Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the UN for Tourism. The discussion highlighted Abu Dhabi’s evolution as a business hub and the role of partnerships in fostering tourism development and successful event management.
Throughout the first day of the congress, students explored research-backed trends and emerging global shifts impacting event planning, including design, technology, marketing, and audience engagement. This comprehensive exposure equips the students with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions in the evolving landscape of event management by 2025.
Prof. Rakesh Belwal commented on the importance of this participation: “Our students’ involvement in this event will provide them with insights into how global trends such as inflation, remote work, and geopolitical developments will shape the future of event management and tourism. This hands-on experience is invaluable for their growth and career development.”
Dr. Hamdan Al Fazari, Vice Chancellor of Sohar University, and Professor Nur Naha, Dean, Faculty of Business congratulated the students for their active involvement, reinforcing the university’s commitment to Oman Vision 2040 and the SDGs. The CEO of Oman Convention and Exhibition Center also encouraged the students, acknowledging their potential to become successful event managers in the future.
The ICCA Congress 2024 continues to be a platform for dynamic idea exchange, innovation, and networking, positioning Sohar University students at the forefront of global trends in the industry.
